Homemade Vegetable Chips

Making homemade vegetable chips while traveling can be a fun and healthy snack option. Here are some basic steps you can follow:

Ingredients:

  1. A variety of vegetables like sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, zucchini, and kale.
  2. Olive oil or your preferred cooking oil.
  3. Salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings.

Equipment:

  1. A sharp knife or mandoline slicer.
  2. Baking sheets or a portable oven if you have access to one.
  3. Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat (optional, but helps with cleanup).
  4. A portable stove or a place to bake if you're staying in accommodations with a kitchen.

Method:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Wash and thinly slice your chosen vegetables. The thinner the slices, the crisper the chips will be.

  2. Seasoning: Toss the slices in a bowl with a small amount of oil and your chosen seasonings. Ensure each piece is evenly coated.

  3. Cooking:

    • If you have access to an oven, preheat it to around 375°F (190°C). Place the vegetable slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Bake until crisp, flipping halfway through (timing will vary depending on the vegetable).
    • If you're using a portable stove or a different cooking method, adapt as needed. For example, you can pan-fry them in a skillet over low heat until crispy.
  4. Cooling: Let the chips cool to become crispier.

  5. Storage: Store in an airtight container if not eating immediately.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different seasoning combinations to find what you like best.
  • Keep an eye on the chips as they cook; they can go from perfectly crispy to burnt quickly.
  • If you're traveling in an RV or staying somewhere with a kitchen, this will be easier. Otherwise, consider pre-making the chips and packing them for your trip.
