Goa is well connected by air, rail and road. The fastest option is to fly — Goa now has two airports, so the smart move is choosing the one nearer your beaches. The most scenic and economical option is the Konkan Railway, which hugs the Western Ghats and coast. Budget travellers and those from nearby cities often take an overnight Volvo bus. By air: Mopa (GOX) vs Dabolim (GOI)

Goa has two airports about 70 km apart, so pick by where you're staying:

• Manohar International Airport, Mopa (GOX): the newer airport in North Goa (opened January 2023), best if you're heading to Calangute, Baga, Anjuna, Morjim or Arambol.
• Dabolim Airport (GOI): the older airport in South Goa, closest to Panaji and the southern beaches (Colva, Benaulim, Palolem, Agonda).

Both handle domestic flights from all major Indian metros and a growing list of international routes. Fares are cheapest booked weeks ahead and outside the December peak. Check which airport your fare uses before booking — the wrong one can mean a long, expensive transfer.

From the airport to your beach

From either airport, your options are prepaid airport taxis, app cabs (where available), Kadamba/GoaMiles services and hotel transfers. Rough transfer times: Dabolim to Panaji ~40 min; Dabolim to Palolem ~1.5–2 hrs; Mopa to Calangute/Baga ~45–60 min; Mopa to Panaji ~60–75 min. By train: the scenic Konkan Railway

The Konkan Railway is one of India's most beautiful lines, running down the coast through tunnels, rivers and green ghats. Key Goa stations:

• Madgaon (Margao): the main station and best for South Goa (Colva, Benaulim, Palolem, Agonda).
• Thivim (Tivim): best for North Goa (Calangute, Baga, Anjuna).
• Karmali: closest to Panaji and Old Goa.
• Pernem: handy for the far north and Mopa airport; Vasco serves Dabolim.

Direct trains run from Mumbai, Pune, Mangaluru, Delhi and beyond. Book early on IRCTC, especially in peak season, and pick a daytime leg to enjoy the views.

By road & bus

Goa is an easy overnight hop from several cities on the NH66 coastal highway. Approximate drive times: Mumbai ~10–12 hrs (~590 km), Pune ~8–9 hrs, Bengaluru ~9–11 hrs, Hyderabad ~11–13 hrs. Overnight Volvo and sleeper buses are popular and comfortable from all these cities, and the state-run Kadamba Transport Corporation plus private operators connect regional towns. Self-drivers get flexibility but should allow for winding ghat sections and monsoon delays. Book sleeper buses ahead on holiday weekends. If you enjoy the drive, the coastal NH66 approach from Maharashtra is scenic, threading through the Sahyadris and river crossings — just plan fuel and rest stops and avoid night driving on unfamiliar ghat roads.

Best way to reach Goa from major cities

• Mumbai: a 1-hr flight, a scenic ~11-hr Konkan train, or an overnight Volvo — all three work.
• Bengaluru: quick flights, or overnight bus/train (~10–12 hrs).
• Delhi: fly (direct ~2.5 hrs) — road and rail are long.
• Pune: overnight bus is the sweet spot; flights also available.
• Hyderabad & Ahmedabad: fly for speed; buses run overnight.

For most travellers beyond the neighbouring states, flying is the sensible choice; from Maharashtra and Karnataka, the train and bus become genuinely competitive on cost and charm.

After you arrive: linking north & south

Once in Goa, distances are short but roads wind. Rent a scooter (the local favourite) or a car-with-driver, use GoaMiles/app cabs or local taxis, and note that North to South Goa is about 1.5–2 hrs by road. Reaching Goa in the monsoon

Flights and trains run year-round, including the June–September monsoon, and this is when fares are lowest. Roads stay open but can be slower and slippery on the ghat sections, with occasional delays after heavy rain, so build in buffer time if self-driving or bussing in.
