How to survive long-haul flights

Surviving long-haul flights can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can make your journey more comfortable and enjoyable. Here's how:

  1. Choose Your Seat Wisely: If possible, select a seat that will maximize comfort. Aisle seats allow for more movement, while window seats offer a place to lean against. Extra legroom seats might be worth the additional cost on very long flights.

  2. Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, breathable clothing and dress in layers to easily adjust to the changing temperature in the cabin and during layovers.

  3. Stay Hydrated: Airplane cabins are notoriously dry. Drink plenty of water before and during the flight to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate you and affect your sleep.

  4. Move Around: To reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and to keep your blood circulating, walk around the cabin, stretch, and do simple exercises in your seat.

  5. Bring Entertainment: Load up your device with books, movies, music, podcasts, or games to keep you occupied. Don't rely solely on the in-flight entertainment.

  6. Pack Snacks: Bring healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, or granola bars. Airplane food might not always align with your dietary needs or preferences.

  7. Adjust to the New Time Zone: If you're crossing time zones, try to adjust your sleep schedule to the new time zone a few days before your flight.

  8. Use Sleep Aids: Consider items like a neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, or noise-cancelling headphones to help you sleep better on the plane.

  9. Stay Fresh: Pack a small toiletry kit with essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, face wipes, and moisturizer to refresh yourself during and after the flight.

  10. Be Patient and Positive: Long flights can be taxing. Keep a positive mindset, be polite to cabin crew and fellow passengers, and remember that the journey is just a temporary part of your travel experience.
